Every child deserves a childhood

Who we are

Angels in the Outfield is a nonprofit organization committed to restoring joy and hope for children who have endured unimaginable hardships. We create moments of connection and normalcy that remind these children they are not alone—that they are seen, valued, and deeply cared for. Together, we light the way toward brighter tomorrows, one child at a time.

Our story began in 2009, sparked by one heartbreaking case and a vision for change. Shannon Kmetic, a Deputy District Attorney, prosecuted a devastating sexual abuse case involving a young girl named Ashley. Although justice was served, Shannon realized Ashley’s healing journey was just beginning. Without her parents, Ashley faced a future filled with uncertainty and pain.

Reflecting on her own happy childhood—filled with love and memories of playing softball with her father as her coach—Shannon felt compelled to help children like Ashley rediscover joy and belonging. Inspired by these memories, she founded Angels in the Outfield to give children the chance to reclaim their childhoods and heal.

What started as a small initiative has grown into a thriving movement of passionate volunteers, donors, and supporters who believe no child should face life’s challenges alone. Together, we are turning unimaginable struggles into stories of resilience, hope, and brighter futures.

  • Shannon was a Deputy District Attorney for Clackamas County when she founded Angels. She had been a prosecutor since 1996 and her caseload for quite some time had involved domestic violence and child physical and sexual abuse cases. Shannon had just prosecuted one of the worst sexual abuse cases in her career, and she realized that more had to be done for this young victim and others like her. She was worried that the system was not equipped to deal with long term issues related to victimization and healing. Shannon was blessed with a wonderful family and supportive parents. She was determined to help children, vulnerable children who are abused and neglected, experience some of the childhood joy she was given.

Shannon’s hope was, and is, that The Angels In The Outfield, will provide hope to children who fall within our mission. That by these vulnerable children getting to experience or do things that they many not have otherwise, or participate in an activity or event, or have something that will assist them on a day to day basis will be the impetus for healing.

    Shannon started Angels in 2009.

  • Karla grew up in a small farming community in Gervais with her parents and 3 siblings. Currently, she and her husband, Steve, live in Mulino. Karla and Steve are owners of River City Glass, a Commercial Glazing and Storefront business they started in 2004. She is co-owner/CFO.

Karla joined the board for very personal reasons. In 2003, her family suffered a tragedy. Her brother was shot and killed, her nephew was severely wounded and her niece was traumatized. After her nephew later suffered an additional trauma, Karla began working with DHS, CASA’s, law enforcement, and attorneys to find Chris the care he needed.

At the age of 17, her nephew gave up his battle and is now at peace. Karla works with Angels and the wonderful people that bring these children’s needs to our attention. She does this in her brother and nephew’s memory.

Karla joined the Angels board in 2015.

  • Originally from Southern California, Susan has lived the majority of her life in Oregon. She is married to her husband, Trace, and has 2 grown children. Susan graduated college with an Accounting/Business Administration degree, but after several years, decided her love was Health and Wellness. With a need to help and nurture others, she returned to college and has been a Licensed Massage Therapist for the last 20 years. She has recently added a Certified Functional Nutrition Counselor credit to her list!

A couple of things happened simultaneously in Susan’s life that affected her deeply. She was selected to sit on a grand jury for a month, and a friend also invited her to the Angels In The Outfield annual fundraising auction. The grand jury experience exposed her to some of the horrific things that some innocent children are forced to deal with. Her experience with Angels gave her hope and she felt a strong desire to help in some way. After a few years as an auction attendee, Susan was approached to help with the Dessert Dash for the auction and later invited to be on the board. She is excited to be a part of Angels.

Susan joined the Angels board in 2019.

  • Donna first learned of The Angels In The Outfield when her longtime friend, Karla, invited her and her husband Rich to attend teh Angels annual auction fundraiser. After attending the auction a second time, she was invited to volunteer on the auction committee, again by Karla, and jumped in with both feet to participate. She was asked to help out at the first Holiday Store and knew that being part of Angels would be something she would always say yes to when asked.

Donna and her sisters were raised by their mom, with loving support from Donna’s grandparents, along with aunts and uncles who provided guidance and childhood experiences for them her mom couldn’t have provided easily on her own. She is grateful she is able to be part of an organization that can show children there are always people who care.

Donna and Rich live in Oregon City where they raised their two sons. She works at Lake Oswego Public Library as the Library Administrative Assistant.

  • Carol was born in Oregon and lived here most of her life. She grew up with a loving father who was a Jr. High School teacher for over thirty years. She knew at a young age that she wanted to follow in his footsteps. She met and married her college sweetheart, Rob, while attending Western Oregon State College where she received her degree in Language Arts Secondary Education. They have been married for 31 years, have two children, a son-in-law, a “bonus” daughter, two goofy dogs and a darling grandpup.

Coming from a broken home instilled in Carol a desire to provide stability, not only for her own children, but their friends as well. She chose to be a stay-at-home mom while her kids were young, but always found ways to volunteer in her community. She has served on the board of H.O.P.E (Helping Other People Eat), acted as a peer counselor for women facing unplanned pregnancies, coordinated the community outreach programs at her church, coached high school tennis, and fostered puppies for Oregon Dog Rescue.

In 2010, Carol returned to her first love of teaching and took an Instructional Assistant position at her kid’s elementary school. During the last twelve years, Carol has witnessed first hand the crippling effects of adverse childhood experiences on many of her students. Carol and her husband became aware of Angels mission through their friend, Shannon, and have been enthusiastic supporters for many years.

After deciding to retire, she jumped at the opportunity to continue helping to meet the needs of these vulnerable children through serving on the Executive Board.

Carol joined the Angels board in 2022.

Having a husband in law enforcement gave her a front row seat to hear awful and traumatic events involving children. After volunteering with Angels and attending the fundraising auction, she knew she wanted to become more involved and help make a difference in these children’s lives!

  • Linda is a retired CPA who has always been interested in helping children. While growing up she always enjoyed being around children and was a steady babysitter for several families. As an adult she has been involved with children in many capacities. Linda has been a Sunday School teacher, youth group advisor, a school room mother, a PTC officer and board member, as well as a team mother and chaperone for several youth trips.

When Linda retired in 2009, she new she wanted to continue helping children in some way. She originally thought she would become a CASA volunteer, however, she and her husband traveled a lot and did not want a long-term commitment with a single child and then leave on a long trip. When the opportunity to join the board of Angels presented itself, it seemed like a perfect fit. Linda was very impressed with the work of the Angels and felt that her love of children and skills as a CPA could be used in a meaningful way.
